Tap Dance Classes In Sydney

Tap classes focus on rhythm, timing and musicality. They are our loudest classes where your feet become the percussion instrument! Common steps learnt are shuffles, wings and time-steps, leading into more complex rhythms, timing and variations in speed. Our tap classes explore many styles from the traditional “Fred Astaire” days to musicals like “42nd Street” and “Tap Dogs”. We also incorporate street style tap that is fresh and modern but also focuses on correct technique.

During tap dance, metal taps are attached to the toes and heels of wooden-soled tap shoes, which enables the feet to make tapping sounds. The origins of tap dancing date back to the seventeenth century, however it was well established by the late nineteenth century. Catchy beats and improvisational choreography characterise tap dance, which is linked to jazz music.

Tap dance is all about syncopation, improvisation and upper body movements. Tap dance numbers often punctuate the first or eight beat count, creating a syncopated beat. Tap often follows the harmony of a song, and the tapping footwork adds an additional layer of percussion to the performance.

Tap is synonymous with jazz, which is highly improvisation heavy. Thus, improvisation is a vital part of the tap dance skillset. Tap dancers are often expected to improvise at auditions, performances and as warm-up exercised.

The upper body is a big part in the visual expression during the tap dance. Tap often combines graceful movements of the arms and torso or the use of props with complex footwork, creating that loud percussion tap is renowned for.

Is Tap Dancing Right For Your Child?

Our loudest classes use your feet as instruments. Fun, loud and requiring coordination, our tap classes are a great form of exercise and a leg workout. Tap is all about footwork, so your child gets their feet moving and heart pumping without realising that they do so, as they are having so much fun.

Tap dance is great for building leg strength and improving the metabolism. Throughout the dance class, your child’s legs are constantly moving. This exceptional workout builds muscle strength and is also great for the cardiovascular system. It helps children to achieve the recommended minimum 60 minutes of exercise per day.

Tap dance is the perfect art style for helping young dancers develop balance and coordination. Balance and coordination is the secret to successful tapping, and dancers will be taught many exercises that help improve these. As they grow as tap dancers, children will feel more sure-footed, and will have better balance and coordination than non-tap peers.

Like many performing arts, tap dancing is a great confidence booster. New skills and the sense of achievement that comes from learning them will ensure a boost of self-esteem and confidence. Plus, they will be in a class with likeminded kids, and are sure to make friendships that will help them grow socially.

Tap dancing also teaches children about rhythm and timing. Although every child has a natural sense of rhythm, tap is the perfect way for them to get better at their natural rhythm. They will learn how to count beats, tap to the beat and follow challenging tap routines. As they progress, their sense of rhythm and timing will grow with them. This will also aid them in any other performing art pursuits.

What Will Your Child Learn Performing Tap Dance?

Tap classes emphasise rhythm, timing, and musicality. Typically, students learn shuffles, wings, and time-steps, which lead to more complex rhythms, timing, and variations of speed. We offer classes that are tailored to beginners and more advanced tappers. Our teachers have a wealth of industry experience and will help foster your child’s love of tap dance!

We explore tap styles ranging from the traditional “Fred Astaire” era to musicals like “42nd Street” and “Tap Dogs”. Moreover, we incorporate street style tap that is both modern and fresh, while also emphasising correct technique.

Our classes are fun and offer a mix of learning correct technique and old-style tap musical items with modern, street-style tap. This keeps all of our classes interesting and ensures your child is constantly growing and learning new things. We like to mix it up – which means some weeks we will be learning traditional, jazz-inspired tap numbers and others we will be tapping away to the beats of the latest songs. Your child will love coming home and showing you all of the incredible new skills they’ve learned from our classes.
